And in that vein, two coaching tips, which are simple techniques, when used well begin to create a magical process, and the simple techniques are simply these:
Praise the Process
Remove the word “Don’t” from your language
For both techniques when used together are helping to create a Growth Mindset in the people one is working with, for within each of the following sentence are two key words, ie: working and effort.
Praising the Process
“I really like the way you’re working at that”
“What a great effort out there today”
Use Of The Word Don’t
“Don’t drop the ball”
“Don’t make mistakes”
“Don’t mess up”
For the use of the word don’t is a double negative, and people don’t hear the word don’t, and though ones intentions maybe good, guess what one has set their players up to do, drop the ball, make mistakes, mess up.
And a coaches reaction could be – I told you not to Drop the Ball, Don’t Make Mistakes and Don’t Mess Up, and guess what ya did, Rah, Rah, Rah, and yet without realizing it, it was actually the coach who set the players up to do all of that.
