The more and more books I’m reading about coaching, what is becoming clearer is what a good coach works to and from, and there are 3 common themes that continually come to the fore of what a good coach does.
And those 3 things are simply these:
They understand people and guide them
They simplify things
They get their message across succinctly
And the better a coach can do the above 3 things, the better coach one can become.
So if one wants to improve themselves and become a good coach, start building one’s coaching from these 3 things, for from my own experience, the above 3 things in the making of a good coach are rarely discussed, let alone mentioned, and imagine if we started developing coaches along these 3 lines, what a different sporting landscape we would be in.
And 3 books where the above concepts come through are:
The Winning Mindset – Damian Hughes
Conscious Coaching – Brett Bartholomew
The Little Book Of Talent – Daniel Coyle
And there are many, many more books and video clips out there that brings these messages and concepts home, and when one starts looking at coaching through the lens of these 3 ideas, one can begin to see more easily, how one can start becoming a good coach.
To start becoming a good coach, begin by understanding people and guiding them, simplify things and get one’s message across succinctly
