When people get into sports coaching they think it is about coaching a sports team, superficially on the surface that is true, though in reality it is all about engagement, getting the players to engage with the process.
And the days of just expecting players to turn up, become involved and do what they’re told to do are long gone, no, one has to become more creative in getting engagement from the players.
Engagement in getting them to turn up
Engagement in building buy in to the process
Engagement in the players becoming Learners and Improvers
Engagement in the players becoming Self-Motivated
Engagement in the players as working as a team
Engagement in working hard on the field
The engagement list is extensive, but if one starts to see coaching as a process of gaining engagement into what is to be done, then one’s approach to coaching becomes more enhanced and dynamic, and 2 people’s work into this area which I would recommend looking into are Brett Bartholomew and Daniel Coyle.
Brett Bartholomew – Building Buy In
Daniel Coyle – The Culture Code
Everything is about getting engagement into what is being done, and as a sports coach you beome the facilitator for the whole process and if one does not get engagement, the whole thing does and will fall apart
