Everyone has a trigger point in what gets them motivated to do what they do and as a coach it’s learning to find those access points with the psyche, so you can trigger that motivation within them.
And looking at psyche access points, there seems to be about four main ones, they being:
and depending on the type of individual you are dealing with, will depend on the access point used for leverage to get into their psyche to activate their motivation.
And players, by what they say and what they do will tell you what their access point is and what motivates them, you just have to start listening and watching for the clues.
And this is where understanding words and why they become important, because once you understand the power of words, going through the access points and working on the psyche takes on a whole new perspective.
Because the right word in the right place will open doors to the psyche which you never had access to before.
Because at their basis words are symbols and words are a form of magic
and it’s all subtle manipulation of others by the use of language, and by the use of words you are putting people under a mild wakeful trance, which enables you to work them in the direction that you want, for there are many stages of being in a trance.
And the words that you use and put through the access points keep feeding on the people’s psyche, so in working with players, you’ve got to prepare the ground in people’s mind, that’s why framing at the start of the season is so important, and then slip in those subtle words, in other words, you are opening the door to their psyches. Advertising does it all the time.
I’ve got a lot more research to do in this area and to see if there are any more access points into the human psyche but the four of standards, morality, pride and vanity seem to be the main ones. The access points into the psyche will all have variations within them. Begin looking at people again with new eyes, what makes them want to do a good job at what they do and what makes them want to keep raising the level to what they do it at, in other words to keep improving.
Access to people’s psyches is always done through a back door and appeals to either their standards, pride or vanity and once you unlock those access points, they then become the front door
