Foundation Stones are fundamental to the coaching process, for they are the first stone that is put in place, and it’s just the same when it comes to coaching sport, for without a proper base, no building can truly start.
Laying The Stone Foundation
So when it comes to sport, the foundation of coaching consists of four elements, they being:
Create and Maintain a Learning Environment
Cultivate Growth Mindsets in All
Activate Players Self-Education Abilities
Build Core Skills and Techniques into players
Then with the above in place, one can begin the process of expanding out the players development by:
Expand out Key Skills, Techniques and Tactics
Develop Players X-Factor Skills
Most of the coaches time will be spent in the second part, for it is such a main component of the coaching process, though without the foundation part, the main part work will not be as effective.
And of course, the real skill of coaching becomes in maintaining the base, whilst also expanding out the keys and developing the players X-factor aspects.
For what normally happens, is that as coaches, we may set out the base, and then we begin focusing on the second part, to the determent of the first, so like always, it’s in finding the right balance.
Coaching is an interesting aspect of sport, and in our rush to teach the skills, we neglect to properly lay and maintain the foundation
