Crux of the matter means understanding the heart of something, and is a summary to what is a lot of information out there.
As an example, the crux of the matter for coaching sport is that:
All coaching is trial and error and 90% of coaching sport is Fitness, Core Skills, Playing Structure and Understanding People and we spend 90% of our time developing the other 10%
So what about this reality we inhabit, what is the heart of the matter of that, hopefully the following paragraph explains it, for:
We’re not who we think we are and Reality is not what we think it is, for we appear to be in some form of waking dream state, which is both fluid and malleable in nature, and in this realm and reality, it has become about the control and guidance of the collective human consciousness by a small number of people for their own advantage, and the mechanism this control and guidance is done by is via the human Imagination and it’s ability to picture build, and also the use of our eyes and ears to deceive us
Now if one has done no research, the above statement will seem incomprehensible, though for those who have looked into this area of study, will go – Yeah, that looks about right.
And someone who summed up this existence was Bill Hicks, and is an example that’s used all the time.

It’s amazing how much profound philosophical understanding can be delivered in a 5 minute comedy routine
For when one begins looking into this world, the one thing that is holding us back from understanding things is in coming to realize how much brain washing we have all been through, for in simple terms:
We are not who we think we are and Reality is not what we think it is
