Concepts & Playing Aims

A concept is the idea of how you want to play the sport that you compete in and a playing aim is a target to help you get there and if you want to improve yourself or your team or set yourself on the path to be a winning coach, the first action you must take is to choose what concept you will work to.

As a coach, the concept and the on field playing aim sets the foundation for everything else that follows. Though they are such a small part of the equation and can seem so insignificant, they have such a huge impact on what you subsequently do.

For example, your concept may be:

Focusing on the keys of your sport, you will become both efficient and effective on the sports field – in other words, you play better

Skilled players, with discipline, playing a game based on the basics, will play at a higher level than the opposition

And depending on your sport, on field playing aims could be:
  • American Football – To score 3 touch downs per game

  • Baseball – To score 6 runs per game in which 2 of them are home runs

  • Basketball – To score 120 points per game

  •  Field Hockey/Football – To score 4 goals per game

  • Rugby Union /League – To score 5 tries per game

  • Netball – To score 20 goals per quarter

  •  Cricket – To score 350 runs an innings and take 10 wickets in 2 ½ sessions

  •  Gymnastics – To score a 10 in each exercise

The aim you choose is not for me to say, as you will know your sport better and know what you want to achieve, though once chosen, everything you plan from here ties back to the playing aim and the concept.

Because you have developed a concept and decided on a playing aim does not mean you will achieve them every time you perform or win everything that you enter. Though if you keep striving to attain your aim, and work to your concept, you will raise your standards and the quality you train and play at.

The website and the downloads will help create a plan for yourself to improve your coaching and if you so choose to, to go onto become a winning coach.

Winning just doesn’t happen, like anything else; you have to learn how to do it.
