Base is an important aspect to anything that one does, for with a good and sound base set, in other words, a solid foundation, better structures can be built.
And when one truly begins to breakdown and examine sports coaching, it essentially breaks into two words, they being:
So sports coaching is about building and maintaining a solid base to work from, whilst at the same time growing as both a coach and a player.
And at it’s simplistic base level, that’s sports coachng in a nutshell. The base sets the level, so the better the base, the higher the level one can work and perform from.
So let’s quickly investigate the base, what constitutes it?
Essentially it’s 3 things, they being:
Obviously it’s not a hard and fast rule, for if working with young children, the core skills is going to be the main focus, and the fitness and playing structure not so much. For as a coach, one has to learn to become flexible, and adapt what one does to what one is working with.
Now let’s have a look at Growth, that is basically, anything which is going to allow the players to get better, and can be both the physical and mental aspects.
Now one might be going, I’ve missed something, and you’re right, it’s understanding people, and though its part of the coaching base, it’s like the winding mechanism of a crane arm, which allows the crane arm to rise, for the load on the end of the crane arm is the performance level of the players.
So if the players aren’t going to grow, and the coach doesn’t understand people and motivate them, the load, ie: the performance and standards ain’t going to rise. And if a coach is really lucky, they may have a team where the majority of players actually motivates themselves, a scenario one will experience few and far between.

Crane Arm (Growth)
Winding Mechanism (Understanding, Motivating People)
So as a coach, what’s your base (ie: platform), what’s your growth and what’s your understanding of people like, and can you recognize the ripples in the water from the behaviour beneath the surface
