Another area of coaching generics is the attributes of good coaching and is one area where there is plenty of information out there, so I don’t need to go into too much detail about it.
I’ll put forward a list to help you begin to explore, some is taken from the information available and some from my book.
Here goes, to be a successful coach you need to be, do or have:
A growth mindset
Asks questions – who, what, why, where and how?
Constantly updating knowledge
Able to think outside the square
Do not take things at face value
Prepared to take risks
Not afraid to have the occasional disappointment
Able to look at other sports and adapt their ideas
Can swap ideas
Challenge your own thinking
It may seem a lot, though it can apply to anything you want to be successful at.
The key to coaching, if you want to improve is to:
Observe what’s happening, learn from it, apply it to what you do, analyse to make sure it’s working
